8:00 PM John Prine
With his trademark guitar finger-picking and unmistakable songwriting voice, John Prine continues to mesmerize diverse audiences with his humble poetry, describing often-overlooked crannies of everyday life. With immeasurable accolades, including two Grammys and the distinction of being one of the few songwriters honored by the Library of Congress and US Poet Laureate, Prine is more than a musician—he’s an American treasure.

Long considered a “songwriter’s songwriter,” Prine is a rare talent who writes the songs other songwriters would sell their souls for. Artists who have recorded his songs include Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Carly Simon and many more.

7:00 PM Mountain Stage with Larry Groce
Sonny Landreth is a Southwest Louisiana-based guitarist and singer-songwriter. Known for his distinctive style of slide guitar playing, his 11th studio album, bearing the fittingly evocative title "Elemental Journey," is something very different. Not a typical blues album, "Elemental Journey" is "a wonderfully bright, woven mesh of blues, strings, rock, zydeco, country, reggae, and jazz that shifts and turns and builds within each track, and all of it fits seamlessly together like a huge musical quilt made for guitar heaven," raves AllMusic.com.

Garland Jeffreys’ long career has been dedicated to addressing socially conscious themes across a broad range of musical styles.  He’s been called an edgy urban poet, the sound of New York, a confessional singer-songwriter, and an explorer of the links between rock, race and rebellion whose work should be taught in schools.  With songs covered by artists as diverse as punk pioneers The Circle Jerks (“Wild in the Streets”) and the neo-folk band Vetiver (“Lon Chaney”), Jeffreys is truly unclassifiable.

"Luscious, luminous, lilting lullabies" is how the New York Times describes songs by Lucius, a five-piece band from Brooklyn, NY. At the center of Lucius are the "alluring and magnetic" (Seventeen) singers-in-unison, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig. After graduating from Boston’s Berklee School of Music, the two young friends and collaborators moved into an old Victorian house in Brooklyn’s Ditmas Park – a former recording studio and music school. The four-story musical fortress, rife with left-behind musical treasures, housed many musician friends including, eventually, Wolfe and Laessig’s future bandmates, Danny Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri.

JOHNNYSWIM is a Los Angeles based duo composed of Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez. The two began writing and singing together in the spring of 2006 and found that their similar influences of folk, soul, and rock blended together lusciously. Nashville newspaper The Tennesean describes JOHNNYSWIM as, "A mix of Lauryn Hill and John Mayer."

7:30 PM Don McLean
Don McLean is one of America's most enduring singer-songwriters. He is best known for “American Pie” and “Vincent (Starry Starry Night).” McLean’s rich American folk music was immortalized in Roberta Flack’s Grammy-winning hit “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” a song written after one of McLean’s mesmerizing concerts at the Troubadour theater in Los Angeles. Since first hitting the charts in 1971, McLean has amassed more than 40 gold and platinum records worldwide and was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 2004. His songs have been recorded by artists from every musical genre, most notably Madonna's No. 1 recording of “American Pie” in 2000 and George Michael's version of "The Grave" in 2003—sung in protest at the Iraq War. Thirty years after its original release, “American Pie” was voted number 5 in the “365 Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts. McLean continues to tour the world and in March 2012, he was the subject of “American Troubadour,” a documentary produced by multi Emmy award-winning film director Jim Brown. This promises to be an unforgettable evening of music.

The festival will feature workshops, teacher panels, clinics, concerts and master classes, as well as piano competitions for both high school and college students in the areas of jazz and classical music, with prizes that include WVU scholarships, substantial cash awards and opportunities to perform in the festival’s classes and concerts.

The registration deadline for the piano competitions is June 1.

See the website for application information.

2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Guest Lecturer: E. Dan Dahlberg

Guest Lecturer: E. Dan Dahlberg, Ph.D., University of Minnesota

The WVU National Science Foundation Interdisciplinary Graduate Research & Education Traineeship (NSF IGERT) program is hosting guest lecturer E. Dan Dahlberg, Ph.D., professor of physics at the University of Minnesota, on Thursday, May 23.

Dr. Dahlberg will present, “An Investigation of Magnetic Reversal at Almost the Nanoscale.” This presentation will explore field-induced magnetic reversal in stadia-shaped particles on the order of hundreds of nanometers wide and about twice that in length.

The presentation will take place at 2:30 p.m. in Room G09 in White Hall.

Dr. Dahlberg’s primary research interests are in magnetism. His research program involves a substantial effort in spin transport in magnetic multilayers and films and ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic exchange coupling.

Dahlberg is the Director of the Magnetic Microscopy Center (MMC) at the University of Minnesota. The MMC applies magnetic force microscopy techniques to a variety of outstanding physics problems such as the dynamics of single domain magnetic particles, micromagnetics of domain structures and magnetic logic devices.

For more information about Dr. Dahlberg’s presentations, please contact Donna Mathess at dmathess@hsc.wvu.edu.

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM West Virginia Sesquicentennial Celebration: Part II
The WVU Libraries and the West Virginia and Regional History Center are planning multiple events in observation of West Virginia’s 150th birthday on June 20. Following opening events at the Wise Library, activities move to the Erickson Alumni Center, site of a traveling exhibit titled “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War.” From noon-2 p.m., the public are invited to browse the exhibit and enjoy a reception with birthday cake and hors d'oeuvres. On display in the Erickson Alumni Center’s Nutting Gallery, the 1,000-square-foot exhibition examines the political and constitutional challenges Lincoln faced during the Civil War — the secession of Southern states, slavery, and the suspension of wartime civil liberties. The American Library Association selected WVU as one of a handful of sites to host the exhibit, which is a joint venture of the American Library Association and the National Constitution Center and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Lincoln exhibit will remain on display through July 26. At 2 p.m., Lincoln impersonator Michael Krebs tells stories and answers questions concerning the 16th president’s attitudes toward West Virginia statehood.
