Event Description
Winner of Best Documentary at the 2003 Portland Women’s Film Festival, In the Name of Love offers an eye-opening look into the lives of mail-order brides and the social, political, economic, and demographic challenges facing Russian women today, which motivate them to sign up with agencies to meet and marry American men. The film follows five Russian women, four of them single mothers, struggle for dignity as they endure male chauvinism, poverty, and culture shock, all while searching for love, and explores the definition of a viable marriage given such issues of inequality as those of resources, power, intelligence, age, and physical appeal. This film will be presented by Dr. Lisa DiBartolomeo, Armand E. and Mary W. Singer Professor in the Humanities and Russian Program (RUST) and Slavic and East European Studies (SEES) Coordinator, Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics at WVU.
