Event Description:
Winner of the prestigious Silver Bear award at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival and the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, “The Road Home,” set in the rural Chinese village of San He Tun before the Cultural Revolution, tells the story of a country girl and a young teacher who fall in love, and the teacher's death many years later, that brings their son back from the big city for the funeral. As the narrator, the son reminisces about his parents' marriage and tells the story of his parents' courtship, so famous that it has gained the status of a legend in the village. Director Zhang Yimou’s use of black and white to illustrate the somberness of the present and vivid color to demonstrate the richness of their life together is very effective. This film will be presented by Dr. Yilin Liao, Teaching Assistant Professor of Chinese Cinema and literature and Chinese Cultural Studies, Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics at WVU.
