Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Seminar-U Lab to Scalable Manufacturing
Start Date: 5/3/2013Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 5/3/2013End Time: 4:30 PM

Event Description:
From University Lab to Scalable Manufacturing—Electrochemical Cells for Stationary Energy Storage,
Jay Whitacre, Founder & CTO, Aquion Energy and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University

Dr. Whitacre’s early work at CMU resulted in a novel sodium-ion based energy storage device that uses low cost materials and manufacturing techniques. In 2008 he founded Aquion Energy which has garnered > $60M in funding and > 100 employees. Aquion is now scaling a pilot manufacturing plant in Pittsburgh, PA.

He will describe Aquion’s technology and path to scaled production. He will share third-party performance load profile data of Aquion’s systems and Aquion’s vision for implementing the technology on a massive scale.

The Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage is a multidisciplinary research faculty team from the Statler College, Eberly College, School of Medicine, and College of Law dedicated to research and innovation that transcend the boundaries of energy storage science.
