End Date: 10/17/2013End Time: 1:30 PM

Event Description
On the occasion of LGBTQ History Month, the WVU Office of Multicultural Programs and the Office of International Student Affairs and Global Services will host a special CECILIA ROLLINS BROWN BAG LUNCH FILM AND DISCUSSION titled “Two Spirits” on Thursday, October 17 from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM in the Mountainlair’s Gluck Theater. A film by director and producer Lydia Nibley, “Two Spirits” poignantly tells the true story of Fred Martinez, a nádleehí or two-spirited person that possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits– a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture, who was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at 16. The film weaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female, and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders. It also explores belief that we all are enriched by multi-gendered people, and benefit from being free to be our truest selves. A film by director and producer Lydia Nibley, “Two Spirits” was nominated for the 2010 Santa Barbara (CA) Social Justice Award. This film will be presented by Dr. Brian Jara, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The event is free and open to the public. Pizza will be served on a first come, first served basis.
