Please join us and the Africana Studies Program next Tuesday, April 5^th at 2:00pm for our Spring 2022 online Lecture. This year's speaker is Dr. Westenley Alcenat whose talk is titled: ""Children of Africa, Shall be Haytians": Prince Saunders, Black Emigration to Haiti, and Radical Origins of Universal Citizenship, 1971-1866." Dr. Wes Alcenat is a historian of the 19th century U.S and Caribbean. His scholarship covers the shared histories of African-Americans and Afro-Caribbean peoples in connection with the wider African Diaspora in the Atlantic World. His manuscript in revision is a study of the Haitian and Black American origins of universalist conceptions of Black citizenship in the Atlantic world. The book examines the intellectual roots and the social history of ideas of universal equality as articulated by African-American emigrants who resettled in Haiti throughout the 19th century.
