Emily Certain is a Test Engineer for NASA’s Exercise Robotics Division at Johnson Space Center, where she supports astronauts on the International Space Station using Treadmill II. Her transition from fine arts to engineering was ignited by witnessing an Atlas V launch at Kennedy Space Center during her freshman year.
Emily navigated the challenges of changing her major by excelling in student design competitions, which led to her first NASA internship. While earning a dual degree in aerospace and mechanical engineering at West Virginia University, she developed outreach skills through opportunities with the WV Space Grant Consortium and NASA IV&V Education Resource Center. This experience ultimately inspired her to establish the Artemis Robotics Outreach Program at JSC, providing mission-based robotics workshops for educators and students. Outside of NASA, Emily utilizes this same outreach mindset to support her community as a volunteer firefighter and member of the civil air patro
