Community Concert Honoring Dr. Charles Whitehill

Date: Tue, Oct 1

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Church-McKee Arts Center

Cost: Free and open to the public.

The Potomac State College-Community Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Brian Plitnik, and the PSC-Community Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Fred Kesner, will perform a special joint concert in memory of Dr. Charles Whitehill. The event is scheduled on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., at the Church-McKee Arts Center auditorium.

The two bands consist of talented college students, high school students, and members of the surrounding communities who all share a love of music. The concert will recognize the former PSC music faculty member by performing several of his original compositions and arrangements from over the years.

The PSC-Community Concert Band was formed in 1982 by Dr. Whitehill, who had directed the college bands since 1961. Dr. Whitehill decided to form a college-community band that would allow college musicians as well as community and public-school musicians to perform side-by-side.

Dr. Whitehill retired from Potomac State College in 1996 but remained an active trumpet-playing member of the concert band as well as a strong local advocate for the Arts. During his decades of involvement with Potomac State College and the community, Dr. Whitehill created numerous compositions and arrangements, with the assistance of his son, C. Rhoades Whitehill, for the PSC-Community music ensembles to perform.
