Potomac State College Theatre is holding auditions for the spring musical. This year’s production is Anastasia. Audition dates are Saturday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, November 10, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Auditions are by appointment only at the Church-McKee Arts Center. Email pscauditions@gmail.com and include the auditionee's name in the email. In addition, indicate the preferred date and/or time for an audition. The production team will do their best to accommodate your request. You will receive a packet with all the information you need for your audition. If you are unavailable either day, request instructions for submitting a video audition.
Show dates are Friday, March 14, through Sunday, March 23, 2025, with up to two shows for area schools during the week of Monday, March 17. In addition to the performance dates, performers must be available from Saturday, March 8, through Thursday, March 13, for mandatory rehearsals.
All those auditioning will learn a dance as part of a group with the choreographer. Each auditioner will read with the director and sing with the music director. Auditioners need to prepare a song of about 60 seconds in length, sung either with a karaoke-style track (no lead vocals) or with piano sheet music — no unaccompanied singing, please. If using sheet music, a copy is needed at least one week before auditions for the accompanist to prepare. Bluetooth speakers will be provided for you to play your track. No memorization is required at auditions.
Callbacks for roles noted with an asterisk (*) will be scheduled during the week of Monday, November 11. All other roles will be doubled in the ensemble.
Available Roles:
*Anya (age 20-30, speaking, singing, and dancing role, mezzo-soprano): A street sweeper in post-revolutionary Russia, she doesn’t remember much about her youth, but she agrees to Dmitry and Vlad’s plan to pass her off as Anastasia. During her “training,” she begins to remember things that a common person shouldn’t know about the Romanovs.
*Dmitry Sudayev (age 20-30, speaking, singing, and dancing role, tenor): A lovable “prince among thieves” who concocts a plot to pass off a random girl as the long-lost Anastasia and collect the Dowager Empress’ reward, but he finds himself wondering about Anya’s past, as well as his feelings for her.
*Vlad Popov (age 30-60, speaking, singing, and dancing role, baritone): A down-to-earth, good-natured semi-scoundrel and partner in Dmitry’s scheme. He once had a fling with Countess Lily and still has feelings for her, even though he is well beneath her status.
*Deputy Commissioner Gleb Vaganov (age 25-40, speaking and singing role, baritone/tenor): A young Soviet official whose father was one of those responsible for eliminating the Romanovs, he becomes consumed with the need to find Anastasia, if she lives, and finish what his father started.
*Countess Lily Malevsky-Malevitch (age 30-60, speaking, singing, and dancing role, alto/mezzo-soprano): Lady-in-waiting to the Dowager Empress in Paris, she once had a fling with Vlad and still carries a torch for him although he stole her jewelry. When reunited, the two rekindle their passion in bold and humorous ways.
*Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna (age 60-80, speaking and singing role, alto/mezzo-soprano): The matriarch of the Romanovs who escaped to Paris, she believes her entire family dead, but holds out hope that Anastasia lives. However, she has become disillusioned by the many impostors who try to convince her, until Anya arrives.
Count Ipolitov (age 40-60, speaking and singing role): A noble who is attempting to leave Paris on the same train as Anya, Dmitry, and Vlad, he seems to recognize her for who she might be.
